Acedia & Anomie (2023) by electronic producer Connie Rem is a masterful sonic exploration through the precariousness and discomfort that is self improvement, the desire for purpose, and the process of coming to terms with your identity. The third studio album by the Maulcat producer is an abrasive fusion of Breakcore, Jungle, and IDM which possesses a beautiful chaos that so eloquently packages together the denial, restlessness and ultimate acceptance that comes alongside self discovery.

During the year long production process and prior, coniumer was in the deeply emotional process of realizing her purpose, deciding to take the leap from being a full time university student, to a full time musician. The production and engineering on the record is not only the best of Connie’s work thus far on a technical level, but also beautifully embraces a variety of emotional motifs.

While speaking on the process of writing "intent to", she remarked that - “I was playing through Pokémon Violet at the time, and Professor Turo's battle theme really stuck out to me. While working on the album, that melodic style was definitly a huge influence.” The choice to replicate these nostalgic melodies and combining them with her more abrasive influences, such as Venetian Snares and Machine Girl, perfectly encapsulates her journey of becoming the person she truly felt she was, and living life on her own terms.

More than just a sonic joyride - Acedia & Anomie is an experience that takes you on a tour through what it means to be a young artist, and a person who wants to be authentically themselves. It is a relentless journey with many twists and turns, and it’s something that no one has perfectly figured out. For a taste of what that ride was for coniumer, this album is the perfect listen.
